Quick Overview

The Dainese D-Air leather suit operates using some very clever electronics and a small air canister to be able to inflate the airbag between 0.15 and 0.30 Milli-seconds and can protect you upto 92% more over the given area. Bike stop have been selected as a handful of dealers to provide the complete D-Air service and experience. Bike stop is a Dainese D Air Store. Work began on the suit in 2000 and Dainese have spent over 10 years designing and perfecting how the airbag is deployed and how it can protect you using already existing armour that Dainese has created over the years. As a result the D-Air suit can reduce the impact recoil by up to as much as 92%. Technology advances in recent years has resulted in the ability to be able to create and locate a GPS unit in the hump of the suit which is used as an integrated system allowing the rider to download all telemetry to his or her computer. The data that is provided stretches from Lap times, Speed, angles of lean, position on track, Acceleration and deceleration; it’s all a bit trick! D-Air uses three accelerometers and three gyroscopes so it is able to give a much more accurate deployment time and can tell the difference between an ‘out of the seat’ moment and a crash. Wether this be a low side from the front or the rear or even high sides.

How the Dainese D-Air Suit Works:

The triggering algorithm: The triggering algorithm is the true "brain" of the system, being able to distinguish normal riding from crash conditions, something which is very difficult to achieve. The effectiveness and safety of an airbag system is largely determined by the quality of the triggering algorithm, which must be able to distinguish between incipient fall conditions and normal use conditions, including sports use. Conditions that can lead to a fall arise when the front wheel starts to slide during braking on a bend, or when the rear wheel loses traction coming out of a bend. The motorcycle-rider system, which was formerly in equilibrium, becomes unbalanced. This phenomenon is the key to the triggering algorithm. Padua University "Motorcycle Dynamics Research Group" Prof. Vittore Cossalter.

The triggering algorithm is the true "brain" of the system, being able to distinguish normal riding from crash conditions. That's something which is very difficult to accomplish, both on the track, where bikes can reach lean angles of over 50°, and on the road, where the system needs to achieve an extraordinarily short deployment time. As a result it required a tremendous investment in terms of time, people and equipment to perfect the triggering algorithm. The D-air® system benefits from algorithms that can be calibrated to meet different needs and has been tested extensively in the laboratory, on the road and by the prestigious German certification organisation Tüv Süd. PNEUMATIC SYSTEM: "Cold" technology gas generator Dainese-patented 3D structure airbag

The special back unit has been completely redesigned to house all the different components safely and reliably. The complete system weighs 650g in operating order The D-air® airbag has a volume of 5 litres and is inflated to a high pressure. The airbag has a three-dimensional structure providing controlled expansion, which combines with high-pressure inflation to enable it to assume shapes and sizes that have been carefully calculated to wrap around and protect the rider's body. All this makes it possible to achieve maximum impact absorption with minimum bulk. The D-air® airbag comes in 4 different sizes to offer maximum protection and comfort to all riders.

How D-air® Racing Protects: D-air® Racing leather suit works without any connection to the motorcycle. This was an informed design choice that Dainese made because a cable has the following drawbacks in track use: - It's very difficult to find an appropriate connecting point on racing bikes - Cable systems don't trip if the rider is not separated from the motorbike. - Irritating cable flutter at high speed - The cable can interfere with the rider's freedom of movement - Risk of the system being triggered unnecessarily or even by accident. - D-air® Racing has won consolidated acceptance because it does not require any change in rider or team practices.

D-Air® Racing Protection: Tests carried out in accordance with the current european standard for body armour show that D-air® Racing cuts the energy transferred by over 90% compared with traditional composite body armour. D-air® Racing is designed for track use, recognising and activating in the event of - Loss of front wheel traction (front lowsides) - Loss of rear wheel traction (rear lowsides) - Rider thrown from bike as a result of rear wheel slide AND sudden recovery of traction (highsides) D-air® Racing inflates in 30 milliseconds. In the most violent spills, such as high-speed highsides, it can achieve triggering times of as little as 15 milliseconds. . TOTAL DEPLOYMENT TIME = TRIGGERING TIME + INFLATION TIME

What makes D-air® Racing Reliable? D-air® Racing and D-air® Street are in the process of obtaining TÜV SÜD certification to the following standards: - Product - Automotive ECE 10.03; Alternative: 97/24/EC*2006/120/EC, Chapter 8 97/24/EC*2006/120/EC - Product - General for Radio and telecommunications 1999/5/EC – RTTE - Product – Functional Safety IEC 61508 - Functional safety of E/E/PE electronic safety-related systems - Product – General Safety of Personal Protective Equipment PPE directive 89/686/EEC - Quality System Management ISO/TS 16949 - QMS certification ISO 9001.

The Safety Integrity Levels SIL 1 and SIL 2 play an important role in the certification of the D-air® system. SIL 4 is the level required for the certification of nuclear power stations. These particularly stringent requirements regard the safety level of a system. SIL 1 regards effectiveness, while SIL 2 concerns non-interference. To obtain SIL 2 certification, a system must be able to ensure a function failure rate of less than one for every 1,000 hours operation. D-Tec® has been working on the D-air® project since 2000 and has acquired extensive experience: - In-depth tests on gas generators, airbags, software and hardware. - Extensive research and development on the ergonomics and comfort of the system. - Numerous tests by renowned certification organisations (TNO, MYRA, CIDAUT, TÜV, DEKRA).

Track Your Performance With D-air Racing: Dainese's D-air Racing also offers sports riders an effective tool for monitoring their riding performance, recording their telemetry data and allowing it to be downloaded so they can display it on their computers - Acquisition of lap time data and GPS speed. - GPS telemetry of bike and diagrams in relation to time. E.G.: assessment of braking spaces and lines through bends. - Acquisition of acceleration data. - Acquisition of lines and plotting on mini map. - Compatible with Google Earth. - Option of using additional colours to evaluate a variable (speed, acceleration, etc.) - Option of producing two-dimensional graphs of two parameters in relation to time. - Option of, for example, creating lateral and longitudinal acceleration diagrams to assess motorcycle traction and riding style - The telemetry management software has been developed by the German company 2D, renowned for supplying some of the most prestigious teams in F1 and MotoGP.

Champion's Protection: The system works in synergy with the existing body armour in professional racing leathers, shielding those areas of the rider's body that need further protection. . D-air® Racing - injury protection for shoulders and collar bones - limits hyperextension and hyperflexion pf the neck - limits excessive shoulder blade movement - when inflated, the airbag stabilises the body armour and back protector panels, holding them in place and maximising their protective properties.
