We all love the sound of our bikes but deep down probably also know we should protect our ears!

Ah, leathers. The defining item of a motorcyclist's protective gear. Whether you're out for a ride on a sunny Sunday afternoon on a Fireblade, tackling Craners on a Panigale, or competing in MotoGP, you'll be wearing a set of leathers. They come as a one-piece or two-piece, available in different types of leather, with different armour, and in a range of colours—there's not always black, you know.

Gloves are one of the most important pieces in your protection arsenal. They need to protect your palms, knuckles, fingers and wrists whilst still allowing enough range of motion to operate your motorcycle, and be comfortable enough to wear all day. Always wear gloves.

In the first part of our “Importance Of” series, we looked at the tiniest part of our motorcycling gear ensemble, the humble earplug. In this part, we’re looking at something a little more substantial. Some are short and some are tall, some are big and bulky and some are as light as a feather, they can be warm and waterproof or ventilated and breezy, but whichever flavour they come in, the boot is one of the most important pieces of gear for motorcyclists.
