While you may only want to go for brands that you’ve heard of, know and trust you could be missing out on new kit that might even be better or cheaper. Helmets, thanks to the massive R&D big companies sink into their development, have an absolutely huge price range and it’s very hard to tell apart a helmet that’s ‘worth it’ versus one that’s not.
Nexx are a relatively young company having only come onto the scene in 2001, but that’s not to say they don’t have a mature product lineup. Based in Portugal, with all their production taking place there too, they’ve taken a stand against tradition and are self-confessed in their pursuit of doing things ‘smart’ and treating their employers and suppliers fairly. A perfectly admirable sentiment I’m sure all will agree, but how do their helmets stack up?
Let’s be honest, a helmet could be the safest on the market but if it looked naff it’d be a terrible seller – Nexx’s range looks excellent. Making use of impressive materials with modern angular designs that’ll go well with the latest superbikes, adventure bikes and nakeds. They target the premium end of the market however they mostly undercut the established players like Arai and Shoei by a comfortable margin. You can even get carbon fibre models which, while costing more than their conventional fibre cousins, cost considerably less than the established premium competition. Attention to detail and safety means that the money you pay will be well spent keeping your head safe and comfortable.
What helmets do they make though? They’ve quite the range – from lower-end open-face models ideal for scooters to carbon fibre sports helmets that’ll be completely at home on the track.
If you’re after a helmet that’ll be at home with the commute, a blast at the weekend or a long tour the X.Vilitur could be the helmet for you. Featuring most of the things you’ll need for flexible helmet the X.Vilitur includes a flip-front mechanism, internal sun visor, extensive venting, preparation for an intercom and even integrated mountings for action cameras – truly fully featured with things you’ve got a good chance of using. A great looking helmet, it comes in at £399.99 comparing very favourably to its premium competition.
Looking at the more sporty angle, but still wanting some practicality? The X.WST 2 is the ideal helmet. Sporting a stunning raw carbon finish if you want it, a dramatic angular design, integrated sun visor and intercom preparation this is the helmet for the sportsbike and supernaked rider, but it’d make a solid road helmet for any other bike. At £359.99 it again compares very favourably to the established competition, with its carbon finish really making it stand apart, and if you just want the functional aspects the plain edition is only £259.99.

Maybe you’re not bothered by sportsbikes and want something to go with your big adventure bike; Nexx has you covered with a couple of its helmets. The X.WED 2 is almost like an adventure biased touring helmet keeping most of the features of a great road helmet with a stylish and functional peak. If you want to take things off-road on occasion then the X.Vilijord is probably up your street with enhanced chin bar ventilation for when you’re sucking air wrestling a bike over obstacles. At £379.99 and £449.99 the pair will give an Arai Tour X4 a run for its money in the style and ability arenas.
Finally, maybe you just want to get to A to B on your scooter or classic-styled bike – this’ll suit an open-face helmet to a tee. The X.G10 is the premium option with sleek style, and even yet another carbon option! A carbon fibre shell and Lexan face shield on the X.G10 Savage 2 make this an open-face helmet you won’t feel has cut any corners, especially if you’re riding a lovely retro-styled beast of a bike like a new Thruxton.
